O'Neil last Thursday. The proposal will be presented to the Board of Regents today. H the Regents aceeptthe plan it will then be brought to the WISCOnsin Legis- lature for approval. . The biggest discrepancy in the distribution of the caleb-up funds is between Madison and the four-year cluster campuses (non-doctoral campuses, including Parkside). Madison faculty would receive 15 percent of the funds compared to the 6 percent aIloted to the cluster campuses' faeulty. In-actual dollars the distribution is 2:1 between Madison and the cluster campuses. Per .capita, Madison faculty would receive $5,351; Milwaukee faculty, $3,416; UW-eenter (two year cam- puses), $3,583; and cluster cam. puses, $2,588. The discrepaitcy between Madi- son and cluster campuses is greater for academic staff in O'Neil's catch- up plan. On Monday, O'Neil modi- fied the original proposal for aca- demic stalf at cluster campuses from 2.2 percent to 6 percent. Mad- ison held at 14.2· percent, as did Milwaukee with 10.2 percent and the Center's with 17.6 percent. The catch-up pay would be re- ceived in installments over the nell biennnium begining in January of 1986. "There are plenty of kids on earth to teach," she said. "Walter Mondale bas the will to stand up to the Soviets and also the . wisdom to sit down with them," she continued, as she outlined the Democratic platform that supports seeking world peace, supporiing and maintaining social security and the ratification of the ERA. "We must reduce tbe deficit and we must reduce the interest rate." Ferraro said that she and Mon- dale would not stop working until the auto workers of Wisconsin, the steel workers of Ohio and tbe fanners of the country were stand- ing tall again .. "The difference be- tween us and Mr. Reagan is that we are for solidarity in Poland, but we're also for solidarity here at borne." . Hoff will speak before the Re- gents today on bebaH of Parkside faculty to ask for a more equitable proportion. Tbe Faculty Senate adopled a resolution on Tuesday that stales they "vigorously oppose the inadaquate and Inequitable amounts" and calls upon the re- gents to "increase the catch-up amounts to adequate and equitable levels." The Faculty Senate's resolution stresses that Parkside bas a "high quality faculty of nationally recog- nized teacher-scholars and out- standing academic programs." They state that many faculty c0n- duct research and possess expertise in their fields which is importanlto local businesses, industry and gov- ernment; benefits of research should be spread statewide and not concentrated at a single campus, like Madison. Parkside competes wilb doctoral institutions to hire and retain quality faculty members, but it is becoming increasing diffi- cult to compete for quality profes- sors because of the salary levels, states the resolution. The resolution suggests that ad- justing the fund from $45 million to $48 million, by adding $3 million to cluster campuses raises, would make the system proposal more equitable. A suggestinn on bow to facilitate raises was also made, stat- ing that this could be accomplished by slight adjustment in the phasing schedule to delay 10 percent until the final inslal1ation. James Shea, Geology professor and University Committee mem- ber, said he is "very much opposed to the UW-Syslem proposal. 1 lbinIt it labels Parkside as inferior." He said that Parkside has been "laking cuts for the last 12 years and 9 per- cent is an enormous way from a catch-up. We would need ~ per. cent for an actual catch-up.' There are a lot of folks out there who would love that baby that someone is planning to kill. Abortion should not be thought of as an easy way out of an un- wanted pregnancy.
