UWPAC124 Ranger News Text Any textual data included in the document ^^55* Committee formed to help NACA holds spring conference here The Wisconsin chapter of the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) will be holding their spring conference at Parkside this weekend. The conference, which begins Friday, offers a chance for bands to show off their talent in front of college entertainment programmers. NACA is a national organization, composed of en­ tertainment programmers, which helps expose colleges to both new and big -name talent. The colleges in the chapter are then free to hire the groups, or not hire them, as they wish. The conference is popularly known as a "showcase." NACA holds a showcase every semester, with different schools in the conference hosting the event. The showcase places an em­ phasis on groups which feature high quality entertainment, but are affordable for colleges. Each performer submits a price list to NACA. Included are the prices for both single shows and blocks of dates in the same area. The block bookings considerably lower the cost of each show. Between 25 an d 30 sc hools are expected to be represented, coming from the state and Michigan's upper peninsula. Wisconsin's NACA ch apter is one of the oldest, and largest, in the country. In all, 26 ba nds will perform on Friday and Saturday, in one of five categories: Mainstage, Coffeehouse, Dance Band, Novelty and Meal. A selection committee chooses the groups to perform several months before the conference. During the selection process, a band may be listed in more than one category, but during the showcase they can play in only one. The groups will appear for twenty minutes each. The bands come to the showcase in hopes of gaining more exposure in the area. Most of the groups are from out of state. Three groups, however, Sigmund Snopek III, X- Cleavers and Floppy Disk, are Milwaukee based. Showcased acts that have ap­ peared at Parkside include Steagall & Blum and Linda Black at the PAB's Coffeehouses, Dale Gonyea, The Amazing Jonathan, and Java in the Union, and George Winston, who appeared in the Comm Arts Theater several weeks ago. Winston, who records with Windham Hill Records, was showcased at NACA's national conference last fall. Accent on Women features Judith Arcana as keynote speaker A k eynote speech by nationally known author and educator Judith Arcana on experiences that bind women from generation to generation will highlight the third annual Accent on Women program on Saturday, April 23 at Parkside. Deadline for registration is April 15. Arcana's 9 a.m. address, titled "We Are Our Mothers' Daughters," will begin a day of workshops and activities of in­ terest to women. There also will be a theatrical performance by Milwaukee playwright and ac­ tress Christine Cedarburg, who will perform her one - woman play, "The Devil's Not Winning Today (The Life and Work of Ada James)," a portrayal of the Wisconsin women's rights political activist. Participants in the Accent on Women program may choose three 75 - mi nute workshops from 29 workshop options covering a wide range of subjects. Workshops topics include dispelling the myth about sexual assault, financial investing in the '80s, treatment and prevention of Pre - Menstrual Syndrome, returning to school as an adult, women's religions of th e past and sexual harassment of working women. Two workshops are geared toward high school students and their parents. The first will discuss post - high school career planning; the second will examine the stresses and changing roles today's youth face. Workshop staff is drawn from the UW - Parkside and Gateway Technical Institute faculties and from area community service agencies. Arcana's talk will focus on how modern women can learn and Alternative Futures for Africa topic of public forum "Alternative Futures for Africa" will be the topic of a Parkside Public Forum from 12:30 to 2p.m. on Tuesday April 12 in Molinaro Hall Room 105. The program is free and open to the public. Panelists are: Dr. Princeton Lyman, a deputy assistant secretary of s tate in the U.S. State Department's Bureau of African Affairs, who has held posts as the director of the State Department's Office of Inter - African Affairs, director of the U.S. Agency for International Development (AID) African Bureau's Office of Development in Ethiopia and director of AID African Bureau's Office of Development Resources. Prof. David Wiley, director of the African Studies Center at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich., and author of numerous articles on African culture whose research has been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Rockefeller Foundation and the U.S. Office of Education. Prof. Richard Ralston, director °t the African Studies Program at UW - M adison and a specialist in the history of South Afrida, who was a visiting research assosicate with the University of Wit- watersrand in Johannesburg in 1981 and has published numerous articles on South Afrida in scholarly publications. John Harbeson, UW - Parkside professor of p olitical science, will moderate the forum. His research for AID has involved on - site visits to rural development programs in Africa and he is the author of a book, "Nation Building in Kenya: The Role of Land Reform," based upon two years' field research in Kenya. He has written many articles on Africa for scholarly journals. Harbeson has taught at the University College in Nairobi and at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. The program is sponsored by the UW - Parkside Public Forum and International Studies Com­ mittee and the University Ex­ tension Department of Govern­ mental Affairs. She has taught women's studies at Columbia College in Chicago and human sexuality at Parents Primary School in Chicago and has lectured on women's issues throughout the U.S. The program is sponsored by UW - Parkside Education Outreach and the WO/MEN'S Bureau of Gateway Technical Institute, with assistance from the Women's Resource Center of Racine. Registration is $10.50 for the general public and $6.50 f or UW - Parkside, Gateway and area high school students. Registration fees include three workshops, Arcana's speech and a box lunch. Registration material also can be obtained at Gateway campuses in Racine and Kenosha, and at public libraries. by Pat Hensiak Editor The Alcohol and Drug Awareness Committee has recently been developed on this campus. The purpose of the committee is to study campus needs related to the use, abuse, and regulation of alcohol and drugs at UW-Parkside, make recommendations for campus policies and procedures, and make information available on a campus wide basis. According to Dave Pedersen, Dean of Stu dent Life at Parkside, the committee began from an outgrowth of in terest within a lot of people. Pedersen also pointed out that this committee was not set up to tell people whether they can drink or not, but to make sure that this campus runs in com­ pliance with the laws. "Everyone has the right to free choice within the law. Everyone has the right to make an intelligent decision, and our campus needed to create some program relating to s ensible use or abuse. People need to have a place on this campus where they can get the information and help if they so choose. It's important that if hel p is needed, it is here, on this campus." Pedersen also pointed out that when the committee checks into being in compliance with the law, they check into the training programs here on campus for the people who dispense alcohol down in the Union. If s omeone has had too much to drink, according to the law, they must be cut off f rom drinking any more. Bartenders will go through programs making them aware of their respon­ sibility. The philosophy behind the committee is not to tell people what is and is not appropriate behavior. They have to make those choices on their own. The committee's philosophy is to make clear that this University is an educational institution. Procedure and policies related to drugs and alcohol should reflect an educational approach to the concept of freedom of choice, within a framework consistant with state and local regulations. The establishment of information and referral systems will be tailored to the needs of this campus community. "It really isn't a matter of telling anything. People need to have support available for them. If they choose to seek help on their own, it has to be readily available." Egerton to present paper at American Association for the Advancement of Science A Parkside faculty member whose specialty is the history of science, Frank N. Egerton, has been invited to present a paper at the 1983 a nnual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which will have as its theme "Science and Engineering: Toward a National Renaissance." Con­ vention sessions will be held May 26-31 in Detroit. Egerton's presentation is titled "Schools of E cology in Historical Perspective." An internationally - known scholar and author in the areas of ecology and evolution, Egerton is the editor of a 52 - volume "History of Ecology." He has contributed numerous articles to the Dictionary of Scientific Biography as well as to scholarly journals in the U.S. and abroad. He was a speaker at both the 12th International Congress for the History of the Sciences in Paris and the 13th in Moscow. His current project is a biography of the 19th century British botanist Hewett Watson, who pre - dates Darwin as an evolutionist. His research on the book has been partially funded by a National Science Foundation grant. FRANK EGERTON Teacher Excellence awards nominations begin The Teaching Excellence Awards Committee is accepting nominations for the 1982-83 Teaching Excellence Awards. The awards are given to two faculty members who have shown out­ standing teaching ability during the past year. Ballots are now a vailable at all major student organization of­ fices, all divisional offices and at the Union Information Desk. Students will be able to nominate one faculty member and give their reason for the nomination. Students are limited to one nomination each. In addition to the student nominations, division heads will be asked to nominate the top 10 percent of the faculty in their divisions. The Awards Com­ mittee, composed of f our students and four faculty members, will then weigh the division chair's recommendations, along with the student nominations to determine the award winners. Particularly important to the nominations, the committee said, is the reason for the nomination. The awards will be given not only for the number of b allots, but also for the rationale for the nomination. These will also be weighed with the divisional chair's nomination rationales. Faculty members on this year's Awards Committee are: Chong - Maw Chen, Teresa Peck, Wayne Johnson and William Reiber. Students on the Committee are: Scott Peterson, Phil Pogreba, Valerie Olsen and Margie Uhlig. Committee members will be available to answer any questions concerning the awards. Once things bottom out, the economy is supposed to start looking up, but no one can be sure it will. Hopes have it that next year at this time unemployment will have diminished, but even optimists think there will be close to ten million laid off. If the work available to this country is going to be limited, all fairness suggests that the load be carried equally. Instead of laying workers off, the theory being developed and en­ forced is that the work week be cut back to four days for everyone in a company in trouble. The company won't lose anymore, and the difficult economic times become evenly spread. Instead of just 20 percent feeling the pinch, everyone will. Fairness is something people tend to see in terms of themselves, in this case everyone is in trouble to an extent, this plan evens it up. Short - time compensation lends life to this plan, which provides prorated benefits for time lost to workers on short work weeks. Current law says unemployment will be paid to those laid off; but this plan doesn't pay anyone off, and keeps people taking home close to the same amount of money. The federal government will provide aid to states with this program in experimental stages. Job security is enhanced for workers, as finding a new job in these times is difficult. The program could prove beneficial for employers, workers, and the economy. Letters to the ed itor P. O/d students To the Editor: In reference to the article changing the drop deadline, I wholeheartedly agree with Parkside for changing the drop period from twelve weeks to eight weeks. I feel that most college students have enough "brains" by the eighth week to decide whether a specific class is right for them. The eight week drop will also allow plenty of seats in the classroom for the "serious" students to have the capability of expanding their knowledge. The problem of parking will also be solved by the eight week drop. Parking has been a problem since the beginning of Parkside. Can you imagine how many automobile spaces will be available after eight weeks? Incredible! I also feel strongly that when a the eight week drop period is instituted, the semester period should also be shortened by four weeks from sixteen weeks to twelve weeks; thus fairly giving the students the time to see if the course is well suited for them as the twelve week drop was for the sixteen week semester. Student Records would have ample time to straighten the records and control hordes of students going to drop their classes. There was no justification for the change of the twelve week drop to the eight week drop, BUT THIS CHANGE GIVES JUSTIFICATION FOR THE CHANGE OF THE SIXTEEN WEEK SEMESTER TO TWELVE WEEKS! More on film To: Parkside Ranger As most students and faculty at Parkside are aware, the Parkside Activities Board is planning to show adult films in April. In recent weeks this has become quite a controversial issue. A group of students initiated petitions to ban such films from being shown at Parkside. They believe in the censorship of your right to view certain films. They want to decide for you what you should and should not see. Another group of students has started a second petition. This petition does not make a value judgement concerning the nature of any films being presented. It neither condones nor condemns the nature of the films. Signers of the second petition believe it is an individual's right to choose what he or she should not see. I am amazed that certain in­ dividuals feel they have the right to impose censorship on the students and faculty as a whole. If they are allowed to censor our films, what will they censor next? Will it be the music in the Union, the magazines in the bookstore, or our books in the library? Passing judgements such as these puts an individual in the same class as Jerry Falwell and the so called Moral Majority. Your rights to view material of your choice; be it newspaper, magazine, television, or films, are directly threated by groups who say they represent the majority. By allowing these groups to achieve their goals, our hard - won constitutional freedoms will slowly erode. Unless these groups are stopped, freedom of choice will no longer be taken for granted. As an adult American, you have the right to chose and judge for yourself. As an adult consumer in a capitalist society, you com­ municate your choice to the PAB by buying or not buying tickets. No one can make you see the film. But, by the same token, no one should stop you from seeing it if you choose to. Carol Frank Editor's n otes What people aren't aware of by Pat Hensiak Editor Becoming aware of the things around you isn't an easy task, especially if you've not been aware of the constant action around you for any period of time. For example, when you walk from the Communication Arts Theater entrance of Parkside, through WLLC, all the way down to the Union cafeteria, on the one - hundred level of the building, how many clocks do you pass? How many people know the answer to this question without walking from the Comm Arts building to the other end of campus and counting the clocks?? I'll be honest, I don't know the answer. My guess is that there are probably two clocks, one in WLLC by the pyramid, and one in Greenquist, hanging out into open space. What are the busiest times in the coffee shop and the cafeteria?? I don't frequent the cafeteria, but my office is right next to the coffee shop, and I'd venture to say the busiest time in the coffee shop is just before ten o'clock in the morning. However, it is usually more busy on Monday and Wednesday at that time than it is on any other day. How many people even knew there was a lake or a pond or whatever you'd like to call it behind the Greenquist building?? I have no idea how long it's been there, but last year when I first saw it, I had to ask someone else in the office if they knew it was there. They didn't. Last week an interesting group came to this campus. They were Theater X. They performed "An Interest in People," a play about the media and its many effects and kickbacks. Television, newspaper, radio, the person sitting next to us, they all have the power to convince us to do what they want. All of them usually take advantage of that power too. They don't necessarily abuse it, so that's not saying we're all idiots, Ranger Needs Writers! I! because most of us aren't idiots. The point of it is, that most of us aren't aware of that which goes on directly around us, at least not enough to take an interest What about the current issue on campus? Of course, the X - rated film. You'd really have to be asleep to be unaware of its impact on this campus. Some people are rather insensitive to the whole issue, others seem overly sen­ sitive, but they've made their decision clear on their stand. I'm not taking sides. I'm taking the easy way out. But, I will say this: I find that many of the problems on this campus relate directly to communication breakdown, and lack of awareness. Not just on one party's part. A l ot of times things don't get into the paper that should, simply because there was a breakdown in the lines of communication within the staff. That isn't so difficult to un­ derstand. Whether the problem on this campus is related to something in programming, or whether it relates to an issue with the faculty and administration and students; not being aware of e xactly what is happening often sets off the problem. The point is not to suddenly become aware of everything on this campus, because even the most informed students have a great deal to learn, but it is rather to be aware of what you are doing, and help others to be aware of what is around them. If going to see the X - rated film is on your agenda this week, I'm not going to discourage that. As a matter of fact, if you've never seen an X - rated film, and you don't understand what degradation and sexism is all about, perhaps viewing a film could bring you to a certain level of awareness. When you go to films, ask yourself what you are really viewing. What is the film saying about the passive role people take on. How does this film portray females? How does this film portray men? How do X - rated films portray men?? Within what limits are men portrayed as out of control?? How does the film reflect on what your reality tells you about humanity?? How do you feel about the film? Becoming more aware of what is around you isn't easy, but it is possible, not just within the theater and the media (there's a lot to become aware of), but even in how your professor acts in class. Do professors feel as if they are completely in control of the class, or are they willing to lend charge to students?? Some of the answers to the questions are probably a little upsetting, and some are probably exactly what you expected. Take a shot at being more aware of what's around you, and how it effects you. It may put you right on target.
