UWPAC124 Ranger News Text Any textual data included in the document x ¥ University of Wisconsin - Parkside anger March 31, 1983 Academic changes; eight week drop passes, M W" designation fails by Bob Kiesling News Editor Parkside's Faculty Senate voted last week to move the school's drop deadline ahead from the twelfth week to the eighth week of the semester. The change in the drop deadline was part of a revised scheduled which included the addition of a "W" designation to transcripts, but was later rejected by the Senate after a tie vote. In total, the changes would have given a student a two week "grace period" to drop a class without penalty. After the second week, a "W," showing that the student withdrew from the class, would be placed on the transcript. A with­ drawal after the eighth week would constitute a failure. Parkside's current policy allows students to drop a class until the twelfth week of the semester, and has no provision for showing drops on transcripts. At the Senate meeting, the "W" designation received more discussion, but Kenneth Hoover, Associate Professor of Political Science, led opposition to the eight week deadline, saying that the change in the drop deadline "was not terribly workable with the type of clientele we have." He added that it would overload the appeals system if more students had to appeal a failure because of withdrawal. Michael Bassis, Dean of Students, spoke briefly, saying that there were already a "substantial number" of requests for a drop after the deadline. Hoover said that the change would not fulfill its intent, which is to encourage students to consider course choices more carefully. "I hope it does encourage students to remain in class," he said, and added that the change wouldn't make any difference. "I don't see any impact (of the change) on my life as an instructor." Fred Clough, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, spoke in favor of the revised deadline but added, "I think it's up to the student to make up his mind to put forth the effort required in the course." Both changes were designed to address the problem of a large number of drops near the beginning of the semester, a problem which is most acute in science lab sections. The addition of withdrawals on academic transcripts, the more controversial part of the proposed changes, received more debate, but failed by an eight to eight tie vote. The addition of a "W" was intended to maintain the integrity Hammelev justifies showing 'Emmanuelle' of transcripts, make it a more accurate record of a student's progress, and to discourage "window shopping" and over enrolling in classes. Eugene Norwood, Professor German and author of both measures, said the desigation was "an incentive for students to make a committment to a course," but at the same time would not'place an "absolute barrier" to drop­ ping. Evelyn Zepp, associate Professor of French, argued against the designation, saying that the "W" would unfairly penalize students who had a legitimate reason for dropping "You should not attach a negative connotation to something that has already been described as a legitimate option," she said. Jim Kreuser, President of PSGA, said that PSGA was against both measures, adding that the PSGA did not have a chance to discuss them, because they had not been placed on the Academic Policy Committee's agenda. The Faculty Senate Chairperson however ruled that it had properly appeared on the Committee's agenda, under the heading "Change in Late Drop or Add Policy." by Jeanne Buenker Phillips Controversy: One of those important news - making items; one that is probably just as popular as when the "man bites the dog." Not since G. Gordon Liddy was on campus has there been so much controversy surrounding a single issue. The current controversial issue on campus, is the X - rated film, "Emmanuel: The Joys of a Woman," which is being screened by the Parkside Activities Board (PAB). When PAB President Chris Hammelev was asked about the controversy involving the showing of this film she replied, "I don't think we are hurting students by showing a film like this any more than by somebody showing a pro - nuclear / anti - nuclear, pro - abortion / anti - abortion film in the sense that it's controversial. Parkside doesn't handle controversy well." Some of the controversy has been evident in letters to the editor in the Ranger. It also was found in petitions being cir­ culated, as well as in discussions of the Sexual Harassment Com­ mittee and in PSGA's Student Services Committee. A group of women on campus have been voicing their negative feelings about the screening of "Emmanuel" and together with the Women's Studies program and the Sexual Harassment Com­ mittee, brought in lecturer Elizabeth Matz, from the school of education at UW - Milwaukee, to give an informal lecture and slide presentation entitled "Por­ nography and Violence Against Women." Ms. Matz began her presen­ tation by emphasizing that sexuality is a vital and inevitable aspect in every person's life, sexuality is positive." She went on o stress that, "Pornography ehumanizes and degrades the Periences of sexuality." Sexuality is defined by Matz as "communication between two people and not domination over the other." Matz belives that "pornography insults both women and men. Men are portrayed as through they can't control themselves. Women are portrayed as being naturally masochistic. Child pornography is simply abuse." While "Emmanuel" is of a pornographic nature, it is a "soft - porn" film. Hammelev said, "this film isn't going to change anybody. People here aren't that simple. I'm not offended by the film. I've been told that's because I'm 'uneducated when it comes to women's issues.' Personally I think it's because I don't offend easily. But one thing that does offend me is people that get off on using their moral standards as a rule to judge for everyone else." Another assumption that amuses Chris is the belief that Parkside will be overrun by perverts and other deviants during the week the film is run. She explains her amusement by saying, "first of all, you have to be a student here to get into PAB films and students can bring their families and / or a guest, so it's not like we're bringing in 'per­ verts' off the street or anything. The people attending this film are from the campus. They're 'per­ verts' that are already here!" Hammelev noted that she uses the word "pervert" facetiously. "That's what I've been referred to on numerous occasions because of this film." She adds, "what's really funny is that this so called 'pervert' (meaning myself) also went to see 'Star Wars.' Who knows, I could have been sitting next to your kid." PAB is allocated a portion of student segregated fees to be used in part for the PAB film series. The film series is made up of a wide variety of films that are chosen and projected by PAB. Hammelev stated that, PAB has recently been referred to as a minority making decisions for the majority. After a pause, perhaps to analyze this, she added, "but I suppose we are the minority when compared to the number of students at this university that sit around on their asses and just complain about what everyone else is doing." Stella C. Gray, a professor of English on campus, stated in a letter to the Ranger the inap- propriateness of showing an X - rated film on campus. In this letter she states, "since such films are readily available off campus, those who want to see them can do so any day of the week. Student fees do not need to be spent providing what is immediately available elsewhere." Gray went on to conclude her letter by stating, "to encourage and per petuate a demeaning portrait women is inappropriate to an intelligent society ; to use the fees of the student body to .present an inaccurate and debasing view of women is, in my opinion, highly inappropriate to a college society." PAB is responsible for serving all students on campus. Peer Support awards two scholarships by Jennie Teunkieicz Winners of Peer Support's $50 scholarships this semester are Verma Love and Eve Spalla. Verma Love, 36, has been a part - time student at Parkside since 1980. She is currently taking courses in Criminal Justice and Political Science. Her major is Political Science with an em­ phasis on Pre - Law and she plans to continue on to law school after graduation. "I'm interested in politics in my community and my ultimate goal is to work in Federal govern­ ment," she said. Mrs. Love is a full - time em­ ployee of the Urban League of Racine. She is a case manager for Junior and Senior High School students in the work experience program which provides students with work experience in the public sector based on their academic skills. Her job also involves career and educational counseling. Besides working and going to school, Mrs. Love also has a family of four. "Since I have a full - time job and a family I have to set aside time to do my homework. My husband is very supportive and he fills in for me at home while I'm at school," she said. A stable home situation and determination are the qualities Mrs. Love attributes to the suc­ cess of older students. She feels the interaction between older and younger students makes classes more interesting. Eva Spalla, 49, had been out of school for 26 years before returning to Parkside last semester. Mrs. Spalla attended UW - L aCrosse and received her teaching certificate in 1953. Her family moved to the Racine area in 1957 and three of her five children have graduated from Parkside. When she first came back to school Mrs. Spalla was a little apprehensive but she quickly came to enjoy Parkside. "I enjoy coming to school each day. It's a challenge and one that I need in my life right now." She feels that if people have a desire to further their education they shouldn't put it off. "Parkside is an excellent school and there are many resources, such as the Library - Learning Center, to help people who are re - entering school," she added. Mrs. Spalla has been active in many organizations over the years, such as the P.T.A., Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the Arc Christian Music Group. "I like to do meaningful things and I try to put all my energy into each project," she said. But for now Mrs. Spalla is making school her number one priority. This semester Mrs. Spalla is taking Spanish and Contemporary Literature: Women in 20th Cen­ tury Theatre. She is pursuing a B.A. in English and will graduate in May 1984. Peer Support offers two $50 scholarships each semester. The criteria for applicants is they have not been full - time students for the past seven years and they can not be on financial aid. Applicants must also write a paragraph about why they have returned to school. Critical situation, example one: A la rge plane crashes into a freezing river in the middle of winter in Washington, D.C. The people still living are quickly dying in the freezing waters, as 20 reporters and camera operators film what is taking place. Should they have taken their chances and tried to save one of the many dying victims, or did they do the right thing by turning the cameras on and going for the story?? Critical situation, example two: Fires rage in Beirut; 20 peop le die, and 60 others are seriously injured. Reporters and camera operators take pictures and run film as small children lie injured on t he sidewalk near the blast. Should they have set the cameras down and lost what turned out to be page 1 pictures for the Milwaukee Journal, the Chicago Tribune, the New York Times, and the Los Angeles Tribune, or did they do the right thing by letting the children lie in pain as they snapped pictures for their editor?? Critical situation, example three: An unemployed man in a small southern town attempts suicide by lighting himself on fire. A local news channel and reporters are called to the scene of the small town, and they turn the cameras on and watch as the man does indeed light himself completely on fire, and is put out finally by late arriving firemen and police officers. Should the reporters have even turned on their cameras?? Did the fact that they turned their cameras on only add to encourage the man to burn himself?? Was it necessary to show the man burning on all of the big networks? Some critics will argue that it is not the responsibility of a reporter and camera operator sent out to a scene by an editor, to get involved in a critical situation. The position they hold on the scene of an accident or during a critical situation is a professional stand, and they aren't obligated in any way to help or lend aid. Other critics will say that the responsibility has to lie within the reporter, to do what they can to help and lend aid. They have to be human beings before they can be journalists, therefore if they can save a life or help an injured victim, they should set their cameras down and help. The journalists tell a somewhat different story however, as they often feel directly the difficult line between doing their job and doing what they feel is right. If they go back to their editors without the story, what kind of j ournalist will they be considered? Will t hey even have a job to go back to if they don't have the story? Most think not. Some have helped in situations and actually lost their jobs for helping at the scene of a n accident. After all, that's not what they're being paid for. That's not what sells a paper. That's not what the public turns the six o'clock news on for. So reporters of a ll kinds find themselves in very delicate situations. While die decision to help will always remain that of the reporter, journalists have to feel a sense of job security, and a sense of ri ght when they help. The price of a human life is certainly worth a great deal, but reporters have to be sure thata job won't be lost, and a reputation won't be damaged if they don't come back to the editors with front page pictures. The press does have a responsibility to help, in a critical situation, sometimes they're the only people at the scene to help. Society will survive without another showing of people dying in the river and unemployment victims attempting suicide. Letters to the editor: Kreuser valuable member To the Editor: Last Friday an era came to past. Friday was Jim Kreuser's last day as President of PSGA. For those of you that don't know, Jim was the first President to hold office for 2 years. Over those 2 years many bad and few good comments were made about Jim and the job he was doing. I have been working with, and at times, against Jim for about a year and I have seen what he has done for the students at Parkside. Jim's primary concern has always been student rights. I have seen now that he fought extremely hard and rarely backed down when it came to student rights. As far as I know the students lost nothing but only gained due to Jim's efforts. Movie still issue To the Editor: The aim of this letter is not to perpetuate the debate currently raging over "pornography," nor is it intended to be a justification for its existence; however, I do hold a few opinions which may be shared by some of the readers of this periodical and I would like to share these with any interested, thoughtful persons. Firstly, I was not at all surprised to learn that the Parkside theatre had decided to show an adult motion picture, for whoever makes such decisions is aware of the fact that the at­ tendance is expected to be large, the revenues generated to be great. Hence, it makes good business sense to offer this film for viewing. Of c ourse, the persons who are opposed to the displaying of the film, "Emmanuel, The Joys of a Since Jim was President, all fingers pointed to him for the problems that PSGA has been > suffering from. This, I feel, is an easy way out. The organization is made up of m ore than one person and we are all equally to blame. I think a majority of the senate feels we created our own problems, but no way should the students think that our problems are all due to Jim. I feel that Jim Kreuser did a fine job as President. This organization has lost a valuable member that will not be easily replaced. I hope that he remains associated with PSGA in the future. Moreover, I am not at all convinced by Carol Frank's statement, "Por­ nography perpetuates violence. .. against children," for I do not think that she is aware of th e fact that the largest single distributor of child pornography was a woman forcing her children to perform such acts. Also, many opponents to adult oriented films are not aware erf the findings of some social psychologists in­ dicating that young men exposed to erotica develop healthier at- by Pat Hensiak Editor It's been a fun year, and I'm almost sorry to see it end. I've enjoyed being the editor of this campus newspaper, and I hope the next editor has as much fun with it as I did. There are a few things I'd like to pass along to the person who gets the job though First of all, don't be scared. It shouldn't be a scary experience to have half the school pick up a part of you every week and criticize what you've worked hard at. It should be thought of as a rather educational experience, not something to be taken lightly, but rather something that you get a lot out of... like a pair of t rack shoes. If you find the learning end of it, you'll never get bored. Which brings us to just that, the learning end of i t. The first thing you learn to do, or you'd better learn to do, is deal with the Ivory Tower. They aren't a bad bunch, and they don't generally pull the purse strings, or even threaten to. (Personally, I think they realize what a threat some radical student editor could be, but they don't realize how mild - mannered I really am. Why, the first time I heard of dangling participles, I titudes towards "real, mature, and private sexual matters" (Kling, 1965). At this point, I must ask the reader whether or not this is really the issue. By showing this movie, we are not going to be creating hordes of sexual deviants, nor are we creating a society which needs such forms of entertainment in order to function as such; what we will be accomplishing by allowing this film to be publically displayed is this: On one week - end in April, a motion picture is going to be shown, many people (male and female) will be freely exercising their right to view it, and a student organization is going to profit by it. The issue is not whether or not the actors or actresses in any film are jeopardizing their social esteem or "degrading" them­ selves by being paid to entertain, titillate, or arouse an audience, the issue is whether or not we have the right to be or not to be members of that audience. I maintain that we do have this Right, and I will exercise this Right, within the bounds of the Law, in arty manner that I see fit. The decision is mine, Carol Frank, please do not take it upon yourself to make it for me. Upon a related issue, Donna Sahakian, in a letter to the Editor, Continued On Page Three thought it was . .. well, no matter what I thought it was.) If th e Ivory Tower does threaten you with the purse strings, just remind them about who exactly runs the presses in this University. That gets them every time. The second thing you learn is how to deal with the other student leaders. This year's group wasn't too bad. I think we got a little too delinquent in some of the meetings that we all attended, but everyone understands the strange life of a college student, and they realize what incredible pressure we're all under. So if w e go crazy in Winter Carnival meetings, with 3-D glasses, people generally tend to understand. Just remember though, if you bring along some sort of fun gadget to the meetings, you have to bring enough for everyone, or the other committee members get jealous. Third thing: avoid all Faculty Senate meetings, all University Committee meetings, and when they send the minutes from these meetings, don't bother to try to read them. They're in some sort of special code that Jim Kreuser and I haven't figured out yet. The best thing to do is just let them think they're in charge, and then when they get out of lin e, let them have it. It's all a very simple process. You don't have to be nice about anything. We p ay them . . . don't forget that. Sooner or later, you have to learn to deal with "the staff." The staff I work with is pretty run of the mill, but every once in a while, they get a little out of hand, and our feature editor argues too much about anything he can. Maybe it's a feature editor's syndrome, but avoid arguing with him. Just let him know who the boss really is. While he'll always try to convince you that he's right and you're wrong, don't believe him, because he's the only one who ever escaped from that home on Highway 31. And it's o.k. to hire people from foreign countries, but make sure they speak fluent English, all of the out - of - country people who work for us do at this point, but they weren't easy to teach. Complaining reporters can be replaced by nothing. The best thing to do is just hear them out, advise them to take two aspirin, and give them a different story assignment. Some of them are in it to just complain, others think they know what they're talking about, but they haven't walked that magical mile in your shoes, so don't worry about them. Then, the last thing to worry about on staff is the Business Manager. People always think he's trying to make off with the money. I have a news flash for all the people who think that: THERE ISN'T ANY MONEY TO MAKE OFF WITH, SO JUST RELAX!!! There are probably a thousand other things to relay to you in one form or another, but nothing works like raw experience. Your best bet would be not to believe one word of this article, and just have a Happy April Fool's Day! There's no fool like the one who reads to the end of the article.
